According to THE SUN, A software company, Carvin Software, has agreed to an $825,000 settlement following a cyberattack that exposed the personal information of American consumers. Customers affected by the breach have the opportunity to claim up to $8,500 in compensation, but time is running out, as the deadline for filing a claim is just over a week away.

Details of the Data Breach

The cyberattack occurred between February 22, 2023, and March 9, 2023, during which sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and financial account data, was allegedly compromised. Plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit argue that Carvin Software failed to take adequate cybersecurity measures to protect user data.

Though the company denies any wrongdoing, it has agreed to settle the case by compensating affected customers. Those who can provide documentation of losses related to the breach, such as credit card fees or identity theft-related costs, may be eligible for up to $8,500 in compensation.

Additional Compensation for Class Members

Aside from financial compensation, the settlement also includes two years of free identity theft protection and credit monitoring services for all eligible individuals. Affected customers can also seek reimbursement for lost time due to the breach, at a rate of $20 per hour, for up to four hours, totaling a maximum of $80.

Qualifying losses include credit monitoring fees, bank charges, fraudulent transactions, and identity theft-related damages. However, claimants must submit supporting documentation, such as receipts, bills, or account statements, proving the losses they incurred due to the breach.

Deadline Approaching

The deadline to file a claim is August 30, 2024. A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for September 25, 2024, at which point the settlement will be finalized.
