Man, wanted for murder, caught shoplifting at Albuquerque Walmart
According to Krqe, On July 29, 26-year-old Jamil Lewis, a suspect in a June murder, was apprehended for shoplifting at a Walmart in Albuquerque. Newly released lapel video from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) provides a detailed account of his arrest.
The video begins with APD officers responding to a call about a shoplifter at the Walmart located at Wyoming Boulevard and Menaul Boulevard. “Watch out! Watch out! Watch out! Hey, police department, let me see your hands! Don’t * ****** move!” an officer is heard shouting in the footage.
As Lewis flees through the store’s aisles, another officer can be heard warning, “Hey, stop running. I’m going to shoot you!” The chase ends with Lewis on the ground, where officers order him to place his hands on his head and remain still. “If you move, you’re going to get shot. You’re being detained; you’re not free to leave,” the officers assert.
Despite initial resistance, officers manage to restrain Lewis and place him in handcuffs. They proceed to search him for stolen items and a reported firearm. An officer questions Lewis about the gun, to which Lewis responds, “No!” and inquires why he is being detained. The officer informs him it is for shoplifting, to which Lewis replies in disbelief, “Shoplifting?”
The police report states that officers recovered $128 worth of merchandise from Lewis, including a holster containing a gun that had fallen out during the chase. A security guard later found the gun. Additionally, police discovered a bag of fentanyl on Lewis.
After securing him in a squad car, officers reviewed Walmart’s surveillance footage showing Lewis stuffing items into his pockets and shirt. A Walmart employee detailed the incident, saying, “He starts shoving merchandise, stuff, into his pockets. Then he’s gonna turn around, and then he’s going to come back up and shove more things in his shirt area.”
Lewis faces multiple charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon without a permit, resisting and evading arrest, shoplifting, and possession of a controlled substance. Following his arrest, police discovered Lewis was wanted for the shooting death of Gerald Ibuado in June. Lewis remains in custody awaiting trial for the murder and other charges.
