Kroger – A shopper in Waycross, Georgia, voiced his frustration after spending over $360 on groceries at a Kroger store where no registers were open, forcing him to use the self-checkout with a limited packing area. The shopper, identified as Colby, shared his experience on social media, stating he had to bag his items on the floor due to insufficient space.
He posted a photo showing his groceries in Kroger bags on the ground, along with an image of his lengthy receipt, calling the situation “unacceptable” and a “customer service fail.”
Kroger responded to the complaint, thanking Colby for bringing the issue to their attention and inviting him to send a direct message. However, Colby expressed skepticism about addressing the matter online.
This incident highlights growing frustrations among shoppers nationwide as they encounter holiday season challenges at retail stores. Many have reported long lines, limited staff, and delays at self-checkout stations.

One shopper questioned the efficiency of self-checkout lanes, noting that staff verifications for scanned items often negate the purpose of speedy transactions. Retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Kroger, have been experimenting with self-checkout strategies to improve efficiency and reduce theft.
Recent adjustments include Walmart offering self-checkout exclusively to Walmart+ members in some locations and restricting use during certain hours. Target has implemented a 10-item limit for self-checkout lanes at over 2,000 stores, a policy designed to enhance convenience and curb theft.
While some customers appreciate these changes, others have expressed frustration, with some even threatening to boycott stores like Target. Retailers have defended the measures as necessary for improving overall customer experience and security, though the changes have sparked widespread debate during the busy holiday shopping season.
Kroger apologized for the Waycross incident, reiterating its commitment to providing better customer service and addressing shopper concerns swiftly.
