Judge Sentences Tucumcari Woman for Deadly Dog Attack Incident

A Tucumcari woman has been sentenced to six years in prison after her dogs fatally attacked an elderly man last year. Authorities report that Mary Montoya, along with her son, owned five dogs that were allowed to roam freely in the area.

In February 2023, one of these dogs attacked and killed 64-year-old Stanley Hartt. Two months ago, Montoya pled guilty to possessing a dangerous dog that caused a death, resulting in the dismissal of her involuntary manslaughter charge.

Court records reveal that law enforcement found the dog, which has since been euthanized, had a history of aggression and had bitten two others on prior occasions. Montoya will serve her sentence at the Quay County Detention Center.
