Increased Storm Chances and Cooler Temperatures Expected in New Mexico
According to Krqe Storm chances are set to rise across New Mexico starting Thursday, with scattered afternoon storms expected to continue through the weekend. This increased moisture will also bring a welcome relief in the form of cooler temperatures.
Current Conditions
This afternoon, much of New Mexico is experiencing sweltering heat, with temperatures reaching the mid and upper 90s and even climbing into the triple digits. Highs have exceeded 100 degrees from Carlsbad to Clayton. Scattered showers and thunderstorms have been observed mainly south of I-40. While these storms have largely subsided this evening, a Flash Flood Warning was issued for the South Fork Burn scar area due to heavy rain. The threat of flooding is expected to diminish as showers end overnight.
Forecast
Beginning Thursday, a more active monsoon pattern will take hold across New Mexico as high pressure shifts and moisture levels increase. Expect thunderstorms to develop in the afternoon, moving from southwest to northeast New Mexico. These storms may bring heavy rainfall, particularly over the HPCC burn scar area, where a Flood Watch is in effect. Although temperatures will remain hot, they are anticipated to be slightly cooler than recent days. Showers and storms could linger into late Thursday night and early Friday morning but should clear by sunrise.
Weekend Outlook
Scattered afternoon and evening showers and storms will persist through the weekend, with the highest rain chances occurring on Friday and Saturday. The potential for heavy rain will remain, especially in burn scar areas. Temperatures are expected to cool slightly due to the increased rainfall.
Looking Ahead
Drier air is forecast to move in starting Sunday, which will lead to more isolated and sporadic storm activity. Temperatures will begin to rise again as the week progresses, returning to warmer conditions by the middle of next week.
Stay tuned for updates and be prepared for changing weather conditions throughout the week.
