HUGE HAUL: Americans to get one-time payment from $5 million U-Haul data breach settlement – but the deadline is fast-approaching

According to THE SUN, With only two months left, Americans affected by a significant data breach involving U-Haul have the opportunity to claim part of a $5 million settlement. This class action lawsuit alleges that U-Haul allowed unauthorized access to customer information due to data breaches in September 2022 and December 2023.

Details of the Breach

The data breaches reportedly exposed personal information, including names and driver’s license numbers, to an unauthorized third party. Although U-Haul denies any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to a settlement of $5,085,000.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a payment of approximately $100:

  • You must have resided in California between November 5, 2021, and April 5, 2022, or around December 5, 2023.
  • You should have received a Notice of Recent Security Incident letter from U-Haul regarding the data breaches.

Important Dates

  • Claim Deadline: October 15, 2024.
  • Final Approval Hearing: October 23, 2024.

Eligible claimants are expected to receive around $100, though the final amount may vary depending on the remaining settlement fund after class representative service awards, attorneys’ fees, and administration costs are deducted. Payments may be delayed if there are any appeals following the final hearing. Claimants are advised to be patient.

  • Costco Flushable Wipes Settlement: New York shoppers have until August 9 to claim a payment ranging from $7.50 to $55.90 due to Kirkland brand wipes that were marketed as “flushable” but were not safe for sewer or septic systems.
  • Cash App Data Breach Settlement: Users affected by fraudulent transactions due to two data breaches can claim up to $2,500 from a $15 million settlement. Claims must be submitted by November 18, 2024.
