HOLIDAY PAUSE: Target to close all 1,956 stores for entire day in the coming weeks – forcing shoppers to switch up their plans
According to The Sun, In a move to allow employees to spend time with their families, Target has announced that all 1,956 of its stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024. Shoppers are advised to adjust their holiday plans accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
Continuing the Tradition
This closure marks the fifth consecutive year that Target has chosen to shut its doors on Thanksgiving. The decision aligns with the retailer’s ongoing commitment to prioritize the well-being of its workers. Last November, Target officials stated that all locations would remain closed on the holiday, unless otherwise noted.
CEO Brian Cornell reflected on the policy change, saying, “It’s hard to believe nearly four years have passed since we last opened our stores on Thanksgiving. Staying closed for the first time on Thanksgiving Day 2020 helped us take care of our team and guests during the pandemic. Once I heard from team members how much they appreciated that time with their families, it was an easy decision to make the policy permanent.”
Cornell emphasized that keeping Target stores closed on Thanksgiving is feasible due to the company’s robust business model, which allows for excellent holiday service without requiring store openings on the holiday. He expressed appreciation for employees’ dedication, acknowledging that while many have fond memories of working during the holidays, there is “no substitute for the real thing” on a family-oriented day like Thanksgiving.
Other Retailers’ Plans
As the holiday season approaches, many other retailers have yet to announce their holiday hours. However, last year, several major chains, including Walmart, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Costco, also opted to close on Thanksgiving, allowing their employees to celebrate with loved ones.
Stores like Publix, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Best Buy, and JCPenney similarly shut down for the holiday last year. Walgreens closed most of its locations, although some 24-hour stores remained open. Meanwhile, grocery chains like Kroger, Albertsons, and Whole Foods have indicated that store hours may vary by location.
For those needing last-minute groceries, Dollar General and Big Lots will still be open for shopping on Thanksgiving, ensuring customers have access to essential items.
