HELPING HAND: Families can get $725 a month in free money in just days from new ‘support’ program – and applications are still open
According to THE SUN, Families in California may soon benefit from a new basic income program offering $750 in monthly payments as part of the Sacramento Family First Economic Support Pilot (FFESP). Applications are still open, with the initiative set to assist around 200 low-income families.
Monthly Support for Native American and African American Families
The FFESP program is designed to provide financial relief to Native American and African American families living in Sacramento County. Selected participants will receive $725 monthly payments for a year, totaling $8,700. The first payment is expected on December 15, 2024, with the final one scheduled for November 15, 2025.
According to behealthysacramento.org, Black American and American Indian or Alaskan Native families in Sacramento County had the lowest median household income rates in 2023. This program aims to address that disparity and provide these families with a chance to improve their quality of life.
Eligibility Requirements
The FFESP program is funded by the State Block Grant from the California Department of Social Services. Families will be selected through a lottery system, and payments will begin in December.
To qualify, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Have children aged five or under who live with the parent/legal guardian at least 50% of the time
- Reside in one of these Sacramento County zip codes:
- Valley High and Florin (95823 & 95828)
- North Sacramento (95815)
- Del Paso Heights (95838)
- Arden Arcade (95821 & 95825)
Immigration status does not impact eligibility for this program.

Addressing Poverty and Health Disparities
Michelle Callejas, Sacramento County’s Director of Child, Family, and Adult Services, highlighted that Native American and African American families in the selected areas are disproportionately affected by poverty and child welfare issues. This program aims to help alleviate these challenges and improve the overall well-being of these communities.
Positive Impact of Guaranteed Income Programs
Dr. Steve Wirtz, a Developmental Psychologist and First 5 Sacramento Commissioner, stated that increased income has a ripple effect on families, allowing them to pay bills on time and reducing family dysfunction or child neglect. Programs like FFESP have shown success in reducing crime rates and homelessness, demonstrating the positive outcomes of investing in children early.
