Heavy rain may produce flash flooding this weekend.
A more active monsoon pattern is set to develop this weekend across New Mexico, with storms expected to bring heavy rain and the risk of flash flooding, particularly in burn scar areas.
This weekend will see widespread showers and storms throughout nearly all of New Mexico. Storms will typically move south and southwest as they develop early in the afternoon. As the day progresses, colliding outflow boundaries will increase rain chances in lower elevation areas and valleys. These storms are capable of producing very heavy rain. Consequently, a Flood Watch is in effect for much of New Mexico this weekend. Burn scar areas are at the highest risk for flash flooding, but any strong thunderstorm could cause flash flooding in other areas as well.
Another active afternoon is anticipated on Monday, with cooler temperatures across the state. Some slightly drier air is expected to move in by the middle of next week, but thunderstorms will still develop each afternoon in parts of New Mexico.
