“Hayward Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Wife in Domestic Violence Case”
A Hayward man has been arrested in connection with the death of his wife after a police investigation deemed the incident suspicious, authorities reported.
The Hayward Police Department stated that the incident took place on September 23 in the 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court, located in a neighborhood just south of Tennyson High School. Police were alerted when a 911 call was made after a family member at the residence indicated that something had occurred inside the home.
When officers arrived, they found the victim, 47-year-old Tania Afanador, unresponsive, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. They also discovered 47-year-old Alvaro Sierra with what appeared to be self-inflicted lacerations. Sierra was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
On Saturday, while still recovering at the hospital, Sierra was arrested. He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and subsequently booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on a murder charge, according to police.
The circumstances surrounding Tania Afanador’s death have not been disclosed. Authorities confirmed that Afanador and Sierra were legally married, lived together, and did not have any children.
In a press statement, Police Chief Bryan Matthews expressed his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Tania during this incredibly difficult time. The dedication of our entire department, from the detectives to supporting teams, was essential in solving this case. Their diligent efforts in gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and working together led to the swift and safe apprehension of the suspect. Domestic violence is a tragic and often unreported crime. We strongly encourage anyone in an abusive situation to reach out for help. We are here to provide protection and connect individuals with the resources and support they need.”
