Governor Lujan Grisham talks human trafficking in Tuesday press conference
According to KRQE, On Tuesday, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will hold a press conference at 10:00 a.m. to announce the results of a significant law enforcement operation led by the Organized Crime Commission. The press conference, held at the State Capitol, will feature federal, state, and local law enforcement officials.
Organized Crime Commission Chairman and Second Judicial District Attorney Sam Bregman emphasized the gravity of the issue, stating, “I want to make this as clear as possible: human trafficking is modern-day slavery.”
The operation, named “Operation Disruption,” was a coordinated effort aimed at combating human trafficking along New Mexico’s southern border. “The primary objective of this was to save migrants’ lives. We know that too many migrants, too many people being trafficked and smuggled on our southern border, are dying in the desert,” Bregman explained.
Sixteen law enforcement agencies collaborated in this 12-day operation, which focused on human trafficking activities near the border. During the operation, Border Patrol Agents reported a 90% reduction in migrant deaths and a threefold increase in the number of migrants rescued from distressing situations.
Bregman also highlighted the importance of sustained efforts in fighting various forms of trafficking, whether human, drug, or gun trafficking. “This is the first major operation, but sustainability is going to be key in ensuring we have all the necessary tools at all times. That requires resources—money, good legislation, and continued commitment,” he said.
The press conference will be available for viewing on this page, providing further details on the operation’s outcomes and the ongoing efforts to combat trafficking in the region
