According to The SUN USA, A popular dating app has agreed to pay a significant sum as part of a $40 million settlement. Eligible users of Badoo in Illinois may be entitled to a one-time payment due to a class action lawsuit. This settlement also extends to Bumble users in the state.

Allegations Against Bumble and Badoo

The class action lawsuit alleged that Bumble and Badoo violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). According to the plaintiffs, the dating apps unlawfully collected “facial geometry scans” and other biometric information from photos uploaded by users. This information was allegedly gathered without proper consent, as reported by Top Class Actions.

Eligibility for the Settlement

Individuals who lived in or were located in Illinois and used either Bumble or Badoo between November 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021, are eligible for a share of the settlement. Bumble, an online dating and networking app launched in 2014, and Badoo, a dating-focused social network founded in 2006, are both owned by Bumble Inc.

Settlement Terms and Payments

While Bumble and Badoo have not admitted to any wrongdoing, they have agreed to pay $40 million to resolve the BIPA class action lawsuit. All class members involved in the lawsuit will receive an “equal share” of the “net settlement fund.” The exact payment amounts will depend on how many people file claims and other undisclosed factors. As of September 1, 2024, specific payment estimates are not yet available.

Non-Monetary Settlement Terms

In addition to the monetary settlement, Bumble and Badoo have agreed to delete any biometric data previously collected from current and former Illinois residents. Both apps have also committed to complying with BIPA regulations in the future.

Claim Submission and Timeline

Class members must submit a valid claim form by September 20, 2024, to receive a portion of the settlement. Users can submit their claims and learn more about the lawsuit and settlement through the designated online portal. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for October 23, 2024, and payments will be distributed sometime after that date.

Other Recent Settlements

Bumble and Badoo are not the only companies settling class action lawsuits involving customer payments. Cash App, a financial services platform, has agreed to pay $15 million after a lawsuit claimed that consumers’ personal data was compromised. Similarly, CGM, a software company, agreed to a $1.5 million settlement earlier this month following allegations of a data breach. Additionally, TaxAct.com, a popular tax filing service, has agreed to pay nearly $15 million after allegedly sharing customers’ personal information.
