According to The SUN USA, Thousands of Americans have been notified about the opportunity to apply for food vouchers worth at least $291. These potential direct payments come through a program created by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service.

This program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), offers financial assistance to low-income families for grocery shopping. As explained on the program’s website, “SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.” The goal of SNAP is to “reduce poverty and food insecurity while stimulating economic growth.”

Applications for 2024 SNAP benefits have been open since October 1, 2023, but the deadline of September 30, 2024, is fast approaching. Those looking to receive the maximum assistance for the remainder of the year should act quickly.

Eligibility

The Food and Nutrition Service outlines specific criteria that SNAP applicants must meet, including household income and resource limits, which are updated annually.

Income limits are calculated on a monthly basis, considering both gross and net amounts. Gross income is the total money earned before taxes and deductions, while net income is the amount after these deductions.

For example, a single-person household must have a maximum gross income of $1,580 or a net income of $1,215 to qualify for SNAP benefits. The income limits increase with the size of the household, up to a maximum gross income of $5,478 and a net income of $4,214 for a household of eight. Each additional household member adds $557 gross or $429 net to the monthly limit.

In Alaska and Hawaii, the income limits are slightly higher due to the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).

Additionally, the resource limit includes “cash or money in a bank account,” with a cap of $2,750 for all applicants, or $4,250 if at least one household member is over 60 years old. More details on income and resource limits can be found on the SNAP website.

Application and Payment

Those who meet the eligibility criteria must apply for SNAP benefits in the state where they currently reside. The Food and Nutrition Service provides a directory of state agencies where applicants can apply.

Application processes vary by state, and applicants are advised to visit their local SNAP office, go to their state agency’s website, or call the state’s toll-free SNAP hotline. In certain cases, an authorized representative can apply on behalf of the applicant.

Qualified and approved applicants will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer Card (EBT) in the mail. This card works similarly to a debit card, with funds loaded onto it each month for a specific certification period determined by the government, which varies per applicant.

Payment amounts are calculated by taking the applicant’s monthly household income and multiplying it by 0.3. For example, single-person households can expect at least $291, while households with eight or more residents could receive $1,751 or more.

In addition, only a few weeks remain for some Americans to claim $500 monthly payments through another unique benefit program. Some may even qualify for $1,400 per month for two years, providing financial assistance for any essential needs.
