FADING FEES: Stop & Shop confirms it’s eliminating automatic surcharge at 25 locations in move to make store ‘more affordable’
According to The Sun, Customers at Stop & Shop can look forward to reduced costs as the retailer announces the removal of a 10-cent automatic surcharge on paper bags. The change, confirmed last week, is part of Stop & Shop’s broader initiative to enhance the shopping experience for residents in Rhode Island.
Paper Bags Go Back to Free
Effective October, shoppers at any of Stop & Shop’s 25 locations in Rhode Island will no longer have to pay for paper bags, returning to the previous policy of offering them for free. According to a press release dated October 8, this move aims to “make groceries more affordable” for local shoppers.
Price Cuts Across Thousands of Items
In addition to eliminating the paper bag fee, Stop & Shop is also lowering prices on thousands of products. Customers can expect to see reductions on over 3,500 items from both national and private brands, resulting in approximately 87,500 price drops across nearly every department in the store. Discounted items will be marked with yellow tags, making it easy for shoppers to identify savings.
Examples of items with price reductions include Boneless Chicken Breast Value Packs, Hass Avocados, Kraft Shredded Cheese, and Yoplait Yogurts, with discounts ranging from 11% to as high as 30%.
Introducing Savings Stations
To further support customers, Stop & Shop will be implementing “Savings Stations” at the 25 Rhode Island locations. These in-store savings centers allow customers to save on groceries using digital coupons. Shoppers can scan their GO Rewards loyalty card or enter their phone number to access available digital coupons instantly.
Coupons can be stored on mobile devices through the GO Rewards loyalty program or printed for in-store use. This program also enables customers to earn points for discounts on future purchases or savings on gas.
Additional Benefits for Shoppers
Stop & Shop is also rolling out several additional benefits for Rhode Island shoppers, including weekly sales, a deal lock program that secures sale prices for extended periods, and meal deals that provide families of four with a discounted main protein dish along with complimentary items.
Stop & Shop operates over 350 locations across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Earlier this year, the retailer announced the closure of at least 32 locations across these states, with some already having shut their doors and the remainder to be closed by November 2.
