Exciting Retail News: Astoria Dollar General Back in Business, New Orleans Stores Closin
Dollar General has clarified the status of its Astoria, NYC location after customers noticed it was temporarily closed. The store on 31st Street was shut down for a week without prior notice, prompting concern among shoppers.
Initially, a customer raised the issue on X, expressing confusion about the store’s status. Dollar General responded, stating the closure was temporary and that efforts were underway to reopen the store as soon as possible. However, days later, the store was mistakenly listed as permanently closed on Google. Dollar General has confirmed to The U.S. Sun that the Astoria location is indeed open and operating normally.
New Orleans Store Closures
In a related development, Dollar General is set to close five locations in New Orleans on August 14. The closures have been announced via signs posted on the doors of the affected stores. However, Dollar General has yet to make an official statement regarding these closures.
Shoppers have expressed concern that these closures, along with rising theft, will leave the area with fewer affordable shopping options. “It’s disheartening to see so few stores left in NO East,” one local commented on Facebook.
There are currently only 11 Dollar General locations in New Orleans, primarily serving low-income neighborhoods with limited retail alternatives. Advocacy groups like Step Up Louisiana are calling for the stores to remain open, emphasizing the importance of accessible grocery options as other stores close and food access becomes more restricted.
Councilman Eugene Green, who represents a district affected by the closures, suggested that these changes could lead to new retail opportunities. “While market shifts can be inconvenient, they also provide opportunities for new businesses and investments,” he told WWL-TV.
Councilman Oliver Thomas added that efforts should be made to support residents and market the closed locations for new uses. “Business closures impact families and jobs, so the city and business community must work together to address these challenges.”
In addition to Dollar General’s closures, Big Lots is also closing over 300 stores and initiating liquidation sales, signaling a broader trend in retail restructuring.
