DRIVERS ALERT: Americans to get one-time payment of $3,375 after TWO major car brands announce $145m settlement over security issues

According to THE SUN, Americans who own cars from Kia and Hyundai have the opportunity to claim one-off payments of up to $3,375 following a recent settlement addressing concerns over vehicle security. This settlement comes after a court ruling required the carmakers to compensate customers for inadequate anti-theft technology.

Settlement Details

The $145 million settlement was reached without any admission of wrongdoing by Kia or Hyundai, as reported by Unión Rayo. The case arose from complaints filed by drivers across the US, who alleged that their vehicles lacked sufficient anti-theft features, particularly engine immobilizers.

Engine immobilizers are a standard anti-theft measure that prevents vehicles from starting without the correct key. However, Kia and Hyundai used traditional turn-key ignition systems, making their cars more vulnerable to theft. To address this issue, both manufacturers have introduced free anti-theft software upgrades nationwide and are distributing free steering wheel locks in collaboration with local police.
