Colorado Launches SNAP Produce Bonus: $20 Per Transaction, $60 Monthly Cap
According to westernslopenow, Colorado has introduced a new pilot program aimed at helping Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients buy healthier foods. The Colorado SNAP Produce Bonus program offers a 100% reimbursement for money spent on eligible fruits and vegetables using the participant’s EBT card.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Nourish Colorado to implement this program. Thanks to our partnership, Colorado families can enjoy more of the nutritious foods they love,” said Michelle Barnes, Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS).
Participants do not need to sign up separately for the program. The SNAP Produce Bonus will be automatically credited after purchasing eligible fruits and vegetables from participating retailers.
The program offers up to $20 in reimbursement per transaction, with a monthly cap of $60. There is no daily or weekly limit on transactions. Eligible foods include fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables without added salt, sugar, or fat, as well as dried beans and fruits that meet the same criteria.
“Research shows that SNAP incentive programs effectively promote healthier eating habits and improve nutrition security,” said Maria Ramos, Acting Regional Administrator for the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. She also noted that the modernized approach of crediting reimbursements back to EBT cards makes it easier for participants to redeem their bonus dollars.
Colorado is one of three states chosen to pilot this EBT incentive program, alongside Louisiana and Washington. The bonus program is currently available at select farmers markets and retailers across Colorado, with more locations expected to be added soon.
