COINING IT: Americans to get check up to $7.5k in line with $18.5m data breach settlement – all you need is bank statement
According to The Sun, Americans may qualify for a portion of an $18.5 million settlement following a data breach at East River Medical Imaging, where hackers targeted the medical provider between August and September 2023. Eligible claimants could receive up to $7,500 as compensation, but they must act quickly as the deadline to apply is approaching.
The class action lawsuit alleged that East River Medical Imaging failed to adequately protect patient data, resulting in unauthorized access to personal information. The stolen data reportedly included sensitive information such as insurance details, social security numbers, contact information, and medical procedure results.
Although East River Medical has not admitted any wrongdoing, it has agreed to settle the claims to avoid prolonged litigation.
Compensation Options
Individuals whose data was compromised or who received a breach notification can apply for compensation. There are two options available for eligible claimants:
- Expense Reimbursement: Claimants can seek reimbursement for losses related to the breach, including bank fees and expenses from fraud or identity theft, with a maximum reimbursement of up to $7,500. To qualify for this option, individuals must provide documentation such as bank statements, receipts, or invoices that detail their losses.
- Pro Rata Cash Payment: For those who do not have documentation or prefer a simpler option, a standard pro rata cash payment will be made from the remaining settlement fund after other claims have been processed.
In addition to the monetary compensation, all claimants will receive one year of three-bureau credit monitoring services to help detect potential fraud.

Important Dates
The deadline for submitting claims is fast approaching, with the claim portal closing on October 22. A previous deadline on August 23 allowed class members to exclude themselves from the settlement or object to the terms. Those who miss the upcoming deadline will forfeit their chance to receive cash or credit monitoring benefits.
Individuals who opted out of the settlement will retain their right to pursue legal action against the radiology center in the future regarding the same claims.
