According to The Sun, A Macy’s store located in the Kingston Collection mall in Massachusetts is set to close its doors in the coming months. The department store chain has identified 150 underperforming locations that will be shut down by 2026.
Timeline for Closure
While the store closure is confirmed, Macy’s has reassured shoppers that it won’t happen immediately. According to The Patriot Ledger, the outlet will remain open until early 2025, allowing customers to shop for Thanksgiving items and Christmas presents before it closes.
Company’s Strategy and Customer Sentiment
A spokesperson for Macy’s indicated that the closure aligns with the company’s broader strategy to return to profitability. The Kingston Collection store has been part of the retail landscape since 1989, operating first as a Filene’s outlet and then as a Macy’s.
Many shoppers expressed disappointment over the impending closure. “It’s sad. I grew up here, and I’ve shopped here,” one customer shared with WBZ. Another remarked, “I’m very disappointed. I love it,” while a third lamented, “Such a bummer about the mall. The place was off the hook.”
The Kingston Collection mall also features several popular chains, including Starbucks, Sunglass Hut, Target, and Toys R Us. It remains unclear what will take the place of the Macy’s store once it closes.

Macy’s Presence in Massachusetts
Despite this closure, Macy’s is not exiting Massachusetts entirely, as the chain still operates over a dozen other locations. However, stores in Braintree and Hanover are among those expected to close as part of the ongoing strategy.
Nationwide Store Closures
The Macy’s store in Kingston is not the only one facing closure. In August, it was reported that a Macy’s outlet in Tucker, Georgia, located about 24 minutes northeast of Atlanta, will also shut down by early next year.
This announcement is part of a larger plan first revealed in February, when company executives stated their intention to close 150 stores following fourth-quarter losses. However, they emphasized that Macy’s would not disappear entirely. Plans are also in place to refurbish 350 outlets and open 15 Bloomingdale locations.
Tony Spring, Macy’s CEO, stated, “We are making the necessary moves to reinvigorate relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant assortments, and compelling value.”
This decision to close 150 stores comes after previous announcements regarding the shutdown of 125 outlets. Macy’s is not alone in facing challenges, as other major department store chains, including JCPenney and Belk, have also closed multiple locations in recent years.
