According to The Sun, A Walmart shopper expressed confusion after a store employee made bizarre comments about “throwing receipts away” during a return. In a Reddit post, the user shared their experience when returning an item, only to be denied their receipt by the return department, which claimed it was “store policy.”
Shocking Store Policy Claims
The shopper recounted, “I returned a lotion bottle and vinegar once, and the returns representative wouldn’t give me my receipt back even when I told her I wanted it returned. She said that it’s Walmart policy and that she must throw it away. Is that true per Walmart in-store return?”
Fellow Reddit users criticized Walmart’s customer service, insisting that customers should always receive their receipts back when returning or exchanging a product. One commenter noted, “Your receipt should come back to you, along with another receipt verifying the return. If they don’t give it to you, they are either not trained, dishonest, or just lazy.” Another user added, “It sounds like your store has a wrong rule.”
Another Customer’s Frustrating Return Experience
In a separate incident, a disgruntled customer took to Facebook to vent their frustrations over Walmart’s refusal to issue a refund for faulty ink cartridges, costing them nearly $100. The customer explained, “At Walmart customer service, I gave the clerk my receipt and the returned box of cartridges. Apparently, there was a problem regarding the return of cartridges after thirty days. However, this was a $94 purchase, and due to their store policy with HP, they refused the exchange.”
The consumer reported encountering an error message when they attempted to use the new ink cartridges in their printer, indicating there was “something wrong” with them. An employee informed the customer about Walmart’s 30-day return policy on ink cartridges, but many social media users disagreed, arguing that Walmart should not have turned the customer away.

The frustrated shopper questioned, “Does this mean that a customer can no longer purchase cartridges in quantity? So just like that, I am out $94. The manager confirmed this and then dismissed me by walking away.”
Social Media Outcry Over Return Policies
Numerous social media users shared their support for the upset customer, with one exclaiming, “30 days is a ridiculous policy!”
Walmart responded by stating that a consumer’s purchase history on Walmart.com shows the latest eligible date for a return or replacement. They recommend keeping track of all manufacturer packaging and receipts for a minimum of 90 days after making a purchase.
The retailer also emphasized that damaged items can be returned for a refund or replacement at any Walmart store. Additionally, Walmart promises that refunds for debit and credit card transactions will be processed within 10 business days.
