Cat Food Recalled in New Mexico Due to Health Concerns

A voluntary recall has been issued for certain two-pound packages of Feline Turkey Recipe Raw Frozen pet food after testing revealed the presence of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus. Northwest Naturals announced the recall, and state officials are urging pet owners to check the “best if used by” dates on their product packaging.

Product Details

The affected cat food carries the following “best if used by” dates:

  • May 21, 2026 (look for code “B10”)
  • June 23, 2026 (look for code “B1”)

The product was distributed in several states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington, as well as in British Columbia, Canada. It may have also been sold in New Mexico, as Northwest Naturals products are carried by multiple retail locations throughout the state, according to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.

Incident Report

A domestic cat in Washington County, Oregon, died after consuming the contaminated pet food. Testing confirmed that both the pet food and the cat contained the HPAI virus.

So far, no cases of HPAI in domestic cats have been reported in New Mexico.

What to Do

Pet owners who have purchased the recalled product should stop feeding it to their pets immediately. If any signs of illness are observed in a pet, owners are advised to contact their veterinarian for further guidance.
