The Restaurant Meals Program

The EBT card can also be used at restaurants participating in the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP). This program specifically helps individuals who may struggle to prepare meals on their own, including the elderly, homeless, or people with disabilities. This provides greater access to nutritious meals for those in need.

Application and Benefit Timelines

CalFresh benefits are typically provided within 30 days of applying. However, those in urgent need may qualify for expedited assistance, with benefits issued within three days.

The USDA approves retailers that accept CalFresh, requiring them to offer staple foods. CalFresh is accepted at a variety of locations, including:

Eligibility for CalFresh is automatically verified during transactions, with ineligible clients receiving an error message. Restaurants interested in joining the program must apply through the SNAP Retailer Service Center and install point-of-sale (POS) equipment that processes EBT transactions. Importantly, taxes cannot be applied to meals purchased with CalFresh benefits, though EBT cash purchases may be subject to tax.
