BIG UPDATE: Waffle Recall Update As FDA Sets Risk Level for 13 States
According to Newsweek, A recall for vanilla and buttermilk-flavored waffles distributed across the Midwest in August has received a risk classification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled waffles, produced by Utah-based Kodiak Cakes, have been designated as a “Class II” recall by the FDA. A total of 7,300 boxes of the Kodiak Protein-Packed Power Waffles Buttermilk & Vanilla were voluntarily recalled due to the potential presence of soft plastic film, according to a notice issued by Kodiak.
A Class II recall occurs when “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” as defined by the FDA.
The affected waffles carry a use-by date of January 10, 2026, a lot code of 24193-WL4, and a UPC number of 705599019203. These products were distributed to Costco locations across several states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Foreign objects such as soft plastic film pose significant health risks. Soft plastic can easily become lodged in the throat, particularly for children, the elderly, or individuals with swallowing difficulties, leading to choking hazards. Additionally, ingesting plastic film may result in gastrointestinal blockages.
Some plastics may contain harmful chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA) or phthalates, which can leach into food and potentially cause long-term health effects, including hormonal disruptions and other toxic consequences. Furthermore, plastic film can harbor bacteria or other contaminants that threaten food safety, increasing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

According to the regulatory compliance company Trace One, foreign objects are a leading cause of food recalls in the U.S., accounting for 11.6 percent of all recalls from 2020 to 2024.
In a statement, Kodiak Cakes emphasized, “The quality, safety, and integrity of our products is our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you and appreciate your cooperation in this matter.”
As of August 26, the company reported no injuries related to the recalled products, and confirmed that no other items were affected by the recall.
In addition to this recall, several other food products have recently been pulled from shelves, including a dark chocolate gelato dessert for mislabeling, chocolate bars due to undeclared nuts and wheat, and macaroni salad due to the presence of foreign materials.
