According to Newsweek, Two egg brands are being pulled from store shelves in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan following a salmonella contamination warning. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Friday that eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market, distributed by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, are being recalled across these states due to potential contamination.

Salmonella Detected at Milo’s Poultry Farms

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a strain of salmonella was discovered in the packing facility and the hen egg-laying house at Milo’s Poultry Farms in Wisconsin. Newsweek reached out to Milo’s Poultry Farms for comment.

This recall is part of a broader salmonella outbreak affecting the Midwest. So far, 65 people across nine states have fallen ill from the same strain of salmonella, including 42 cases in Wisconsin and 11 in Illinois. The outbreak has also impacted California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Utah, and Virginia. While 24 people have been hospitalized, no deaths have been reported.

Health Risks and Symptoms

Consuming food contaminated with salmonella can lead to salmonellosis, a common bacterial foodborne illness. Symptoms usually include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, and they typically appear six hours to six days after consuming contaminated food. Most people recover within four to seven days without treatment. However, young children, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems may experience more severe illness.

Products Affected by the Recall

The recall affects all carton sizes and egg types from Milo’s Poultry Farms, all carton sizes of eggs under the Tony’s Fresh Market brand, and all eggs distributed for retail food services. All expiration dates for these products are included in the recall.

The FDA initiated the recall after informing Milo’s Poultry Farms that environmental samples tested positive for salmonella. In response, the company has halted production and distribution and will undergo thorough testing and sanitization of its farms and processing equipment.

What Consumers Should Do

The FDA advises consumers who purchased eggs branded Milo’s Poultry Farms or Tony’s Fresh Market not to eat them. Instead, they should dispose of the eggs or return them to the store where they were purchased. Additionally, any surfaces that may have come into contact with the eggs should be cleaned with hot, soapy water.
