BIG RECALL: Scones Recall Update As FDA Sets Risk Level
According to News Week, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall of two scone products from Skagit River Bakery & Café as a Class II recall due to undeclared allergens. The Washington-based bakery voluntarily recalled batches of their Blueberry and Marionberry Scones on August 22 after discovering that soy lecithin and soybean oil were not listed on the product labels.
FDA Classification Details
On Wednesday, the FDA updated the recall status to Class II, indicating that “use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” For context, a Class III recall is used when adverse health consequences are unlikely, while Class I is issued when there is a reasonable probability of severe health issues or death.
Details of the Recall
The recall affects approximately 1,200 units of Marionberry Scones, which were bulk-packaged in cake boxes with parchment paper and sold unwrapped. These products were not individually labeled, and ingredient information was made available in notebooks at retail locations. The recall was voluntarily initiated by Skagit River Bakery & Café after receiving notification via phone call.
Potential Health Risks
Undeclared soy lecithin and soybean oil can pose a risk to individuals with soy allergies, who may experience reactions ranging from mild symptoms like rashes, itching, and hives to severe anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition. According to Anaphylaxis U.K., allergic reactions can occur immediately or be delayed, taking hours or even days to manifest.

In addition to this recall, the FDA also recently recalled several dog food products produced by Answers Pet Food, based in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, due to contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono).
