How to Join the National Guard
To begin the process of joining the New Mexico National Guard, the first step is to fill out a contact form. A recruiter will then reach out to answer any questions and guide you through the next steps.
You will need to take an eligibility test to assess your qualifications. Once you pass, you’ll secure your Basic Combat Training (BCT) ship date, confirm your job within the Guard, and finalize your pay. The last step before officially joining is taking the Oath of Enlistment.
While awaiting your departure for BCT, you will participate in the Recruit Sustainment Program, which takes place one weekend a month. This program helps prepare you for the challenges of basic training.
Important Requirements
To join the New Mexico National Guard without prior military service, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be between 17 and 35 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Be at least a junior in high school, or have a high school diploma or GED certificate
- Achieve a minimum score on the ASVAB test
