Americans to get payment up to $4,400 from $1.5m data breach settlement – Just need a bank statement
According to The Sun US, Victims of a data breach have just hours remaining to file a claim for a one-time payment from a $1.5 million settlement.
The breach, which compromised the personal data of thousands of CGM customers in December 2022, has led to a class action lawsuit. While CGM, a service solutions company, has not admitted any wrongdoing, the settlement addresses claims that the company failed to adequately protect consumer data.
The lawsuit alleges that CGM “failed to implement industry standards for data security and did not properly train employees on cybersecurity protocols, resulting in the data breach.” The compromised information reportedly included driver’s license or state ID numbers and Social Security numbers.
Approximately 279,063 people were affected by the breach and are eligible for compensation under the settlement. Eligible individuals would have received a notification from CGM regarding the breach.
Claimants could receive a cash payment of up to $4,400, depending on the losses they suffered due to the breach. Additionally, they are entitled to three years of credit monitoring services and identity theft protection with coverage of up to $1 million.
For ordinary losses, claimants can receive up to $400, plus $20 per hour for up to four hours of lost time. Those who suffered extraordinary losses may receive up to $4,000. However, to claim these payments, individuals must provide proof of loss through documents like invoices, account statements, credit reports, or insurance claims.
If no documented losses are available, claimants can receive a cash payment estimated to be around $20, though this amount could change based on the number of claims filed.
A few critical dates are associated with this settlement. The deadline to object to the settlement terms or exclude oneself from the payout was June 27, 2024. Failure to do so by that date means that claimants cannot pursue further legal action against CGM for the same issues. Additionally, individuals who do not submit a claim form will not receive any payment.
The final deadline to submit claim forms is August 26, 2024, leaving only a few hours to file. A final approval hearing is scheduled for later today.
In other news, some Americans may be eligible for a payout of up to $6,000 from a $2.7 million settlement related to a February 2023 data breach at Great Expressions, a network of nearly 250 dental care centers. Claims against Great Expressions allege inadequate cybersecurity measures. The deadline for filing claims in that case is November 8.
Additionally, Costco shoppers may be eligible for compensation from a multimillion-dollar settlement regarding overcharges, as previously reported by The U.S. Sun.
