According to The Sun, Americans affected by a February 2023 data breach may be eligible for a one-time cash payment from a class action lawsuit settlement against Group 1001. The prominent insurance and annuity company, accused of failing to protect personal information, has agreed to a $4.76 million settlement to resolve the claims, despite denying any wrongdoing.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a share of the settlement, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a Group 1001 customer, employee, dependent, or payee.
  • Have been directly impacted by the February 2023 data breach, with personal information compromised.

Eligible claimants need to provide proof of their data breach-related losses, which can include account statements, invoices, or credit reports.

How to File a Claim

Claims must be filed online via the settlement website. A Class Member ID, received through a postcard, is required to start the process. Those who did not receive a postcard should contact the settlement administrator for further instructions.

Claimants should submit their claim form along with proof of their financial losses due to the breach. Reimbursements could reach up to $5,000, covering expenses like bank fees, credit card costs, travel, communication charges, and lost time. Alternatively, claimants can opt for a pro rata payment based on the total number of valid claims, with a minimum payout of $5.

Additional Benefits

All approved claimants will receive three years of identity protection services, credit monitoring, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance at no additional cost.

  • Claim Filing Deadline: October 10, 2024
