According to The US SUN, Consumers impacted by the February 2023 data breach at Great Expressions may qualify for compensation through a $2.7 million settlement. This settlement addresses claims that Great Expressions, a network of 246 dental care centers across the U.S., failed to adequately protect sensitive consumer information, leading to unauthorized access.

The settlement applies to those who received a notification from Great Expressions regarding the data breach. It distinguishes between two subclasses based on whether Social Security numbers were potentially compromised.

Compensation Details

For individuals whose Social Security numbers were accessed, the settlement provides up to $500 for ordinary losses and up to $5,000 for extraordinary losses. Additionally, claimants can receive compensation for up to two hours of lost time at a rate of $20 per hour.

For those whose Social Security numbers were not impacted, the settlement offers up to $40 for two hours of lost time, also at $20 per hour.

Great Expressions has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to settle to resolve the claims.

Important Deadlines

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by November 8, 2024. Claims should include proof of losses related to the data breach, such as receipts, bills, invoices, or credit reports.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is October 11, 2024, with the final approval hearing scheduled for December 12, 2024. All claims must be filed under penalty of perjury, as fraudulent claims could negatively impact other eligible class members.

Claim forms can be completed online. If you are unsure about your eligibility, consult the FAQ section on the Settlement Administrator’s website before filing.

This case, officially known as Great Expressions Data Security Incident Litigation, is being heard in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan under case number 2:23-cv-11185-JJCG-CI.
