Alex Walsh’s Sister Breaks Silence Over Controversial Bronze Medal Disqualification
U.S. swimmer Alex Walsh, 23, made headlines for an unfortunate reason on Saturday after being disqualified from the 200-meter individual medley. Despite finishing third in the race, Walsh’s disqualification meant she would not receive the bronze medal.
The disqualification occurred when Walsh was found to have turned too soon during the backstroke portion of the event. The committee reviewed the incident and determined that this was a violation, leading to the decision to disqualify her.
As a result, Australia’s Kaylee McKeown, who had originally finished fourth, was awarded the bronze medal. American swimmer Kate Douglass claimed the silver, while Summer McIntosh of Canada secured first place with a new Olympic record time of 2:06.56.
Gretchen Walsh, Alex’s sister, had just won gold in the 400-meter mixed medley less than an hour after Alex’s disqualification. She expressed her shock and disappointment at the sudden turn of events.
“I’m just devastated,” Gretchen told WFLA News. “Alex has worked so hard, and it’s really hard to find the right words to express how sad I am. But I know she’ll come back stronger than ever.”
Gretchen recounted her emotions as she witnessed her sister’s disqualification: “I was thrilled when Alex touched third, and then I did one more 50 of warm down and found out about the DQ. I was just standing in the pool, so upset.”
Despite the setback, Gretchen focused on supporting her sister and honoring her achievements: “I knew I had to quickly move on, give her a big hug, and let her know I’m here for her. Then I had to go out and perform in her honor.”
It’s truly heartbreaking to see such a talented swimmer face such a significant setback. Fans hope to see Alex Walsh’s career continue to shine and not be overshadowed by this unfortunate incident.
