The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) revealed last week that 2024 marked a record year for DWI arrests, highlighting intensified efforts to combat impaired driving across the state.

In a press statement, NMSP credited District 5—which encompasses Bernalillo, Valencia, Torrance, Sandoval counties, and parts of Santa Fe County—with spearheading initiatives aimed at reducing the prevalence of alcohol-related crashes.

“Countless lives could be saved if every driver chose to avoid impaired driving,” stated NMSP, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in ensuring road safety.

According to the report, NMSP officers arrested 803 impaired drivers in 2024, a significant rise from 673 arrests recorded in 2023. This increase reflects the department’s robust commitment to addressing the dangers of driving under the influence.

Looking ahead, NMSP pledged to continue its efforts to reduce DWI incidents by maintaining sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and other proactive enforcement measures throughout 2025.

“Our mission is to ensure safer roads for every resident and visitor in New Mexico,” the department noted.
