This week, delegates from Alamogordo MainStreet are attending the Main Street Now Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, marking a significant milestone for the city’s ongoing revitalization efforts. The conference, the largest of its kind, gathers local leaders from across the United States to collaborate on strategies to enhance downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts through preservation-based economic growth.
For Alamogordo MainStreet, the conference provides an invaluable opportunity for networking, sharing innovative ideas, and learning new techniques to address common challenges faced by communities nationwide. With nearly a decade of efforts focused on the revitalization of the New York Avenue business district, Alamogordo MainStreet leadership is actively engaged in improving infrastructure. Ongoing projects, including the installation of new sewer and water lines, sidewalks, and updated cityscape, are setting the stage for even greater development in the area.
In addition to the conference activities, Alamogordo’s efforts have gained national recognition. Claudia Loya, the President of the Alamogordo MainStreet Board and owner of Elite Memories Boutique, was honored at the conference as the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Mary Means Leadership Award. This award recognizes outstanding local leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary vision, dedication, and leadership in community transformation.

Claudia Loya’s work in Alamogordo’s downtown has been pivotal. From overseeing the $2.9 million MainStreet Makeover to launching the Alamo Venture Academy and revitalizing Side Street Art Alley with over 1,600 volunteer hours, Claudia has been at the forefront of shaping the city’s positive transformation. Her leadership goes beyond infrastructure; she works tirelessly to bring people together, advocate for small businesses, and promote accessibility throughout Alamogordo.
“The community of Alamogordo welcomed my family with open arms, and everything I do is a way of giving back to this place that gave us a fresh start,” said Loya in response to receiving the award.
The Mary Means Leadership Award, named after the founder of Main Street America, celebrates individuals who embody the principles of the Main Street Movement, and Claudia’s dedication to Alamogordo’s revitalization exemplifies those values. Her work has played a crucial role in building a stronger, more connected community, making her a deserving recipient of this national honor.
As Alamogordo continues its revitalization efforts, AlamogordoTownNews.org and KALHRadio.org extend their congratulations to Claudia Loya and the entire Alamogordo MainStreet team. This recognition reflects not only Claudia’s leadership but also the collaborative efforts of all involved in transforming the New York Avenue district. We look forward to seeing how the lessons learned at the Main Street Now Conference will benefit Alamogordo’s continued growth and success.
