Alamogordo Police Warn Residents About Online Scam Email Threats
The Alamogordo Police Department has issued a scam alert, as reported by AlamogordoTownNews.org, after several local residents received blackmail-style emails.
According to the report, scammers are using online photos of people’s homes to make their threats more convincing. They claim that if the victim does not send them Bitcoin, they will release fake incriminating videos to the victim’s contacts. The photos often appear to be sourced from Google Maps, making the threats seem more personal and alarming.
If you receive suspicious emails, phone calls, or texts from unknown sources, it’s important not to engage or respond. Instead, report the incident to local law enforcement. Additionally, scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/.
An example of a scam email sent to a resident included a photo of their home, enhancing the sense of urgency and fear.
Stay vigilant, and remember: if something doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts. Do not share personal information or send money to individuals you don’t know.
