At 8:05 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2024, AlamogordoTownNews.org reported that a dramatic standoff unfolded at White Sands Mall following a high-speed chase that ended at the shopping center. The situation was brought under control around midnight.

Earlier in the evening, the Tularosa Basin Dispatch Authority had announced that White Sands Blvd, from Taco Bell to the Fairgrounds Area, was closed to through traffic due to the ongoing police operation.

Officers requested that mall managers evacuate stores including Melrose, Ross, Marshalls, and Harbor Freight through their back entrances. The standoff centered around a barricaded car parked in front of Subway, with a single occupant who was identified as a suspect.

An unnamed officer revealed that the suspect is a “known person of interest” with a history of prior incidents. Eyewitnesses reported that the suspect was seen shouting from the car, expressing a desire to avoid returning to jail and refusing to exit the vehicle.

To manage the situation, the police deployed a Bearcat armored vehicle and additional support from other agencies, including the New Mexico State Police. The suspect was believed to be armed and dangerous, posing a risk to himself and others. Family members were brought in to help negotiate with the suspect.

As midnight approached, reports indicated that shots were fired. By 12:10 a.m., traffic on White Sands Blvd was restored to normal.

An Alamogordo Police Department representative confirmed that the suspect was being transported to a local hospital. An official statement from the APD public affairs office is expected on Friday. Additionally, the New Mexico State Police will conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting that occurred during the standoff.

No injuries to officers have been reported, and the condition of the suspect, who is now in custody, remains undisclosed. This is an evolving situation, and further updates will be provided as they become available from the Alamogordo Police Department and the New Mexico State Police.
