A remarkable project nearly two decades in the making is underway in New Mexico. A local nonprofit, Capped, Inc., is working to develop the largest permanent labyrinth in the United States.

The Trinity Turtle Healing Labyrinth Park in Alamogordo is expanding to become the nation’s largest permanent labyrinth. “When we see people out there enjoying it, it brings us so much joy,” said Tresa VanWinkle, founder of Capped, Inc.

VanWinkle, whose organization focuses on cancer prevention and reducing other diseases, believes that reducing stress plays a crucial role in achieving a world free from preventable illnesses. “Reducing stress is key to our vision of a world without preventable disease,” she stated.

The labyrinth, which began as a simple concrete slab, has already taken the form of a turtle’s head. The expansion will include the turtle’s body and tail, covering 26 acres in total. VanWinkle explains that walking the labyrinth’s geometric paths helps reduce stress. “The design reflects the past, present, and future, and the U-turns switch you from left brain to right brain,” she added.

The project’s estimated cost exceeds $750,000, with the majority of funds raised through donations over the past 18 years. This year, the state’s Outdoor Recreation Division contributed $100,000 in grant money. “It’s a wonderful feeling to see our dreams coming true,” VanWinkle said.

The labyrinth park is open 24/7 and welcomes visitors from all walks of life. “We hope to bring peace, harmony, and joy to the world through this project,” VanWinkle concluded. The full labyrinth is expected to be completed by December.
