After 140 years, the historic furniture chain is closing all 380 of its outlets. Customers still have a few days to utilize their gift cards.
According to The Sun, Badcock Home Furniture is closing its doors after months of struggling to stay afloat. The decision follows the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of its parent company, Conn’s Inc.
The closures were announced on Facebook on Monday, causing a stir in communities where Badcock stores have long been a fixture. The furniture retailer operates over 380 stores across Georgia, Florida, the Carolinas, and other Southern states.
Clearance Sales as Operations Wind Down
As Badcock Home Furniture winds down its operations, it is offering clearance sales with discounts ranging from 40% to 60% on all merchandise. However, the company has emphasized that all sales are final, and online purchases are no longer available. Customers can find a list of participating locations offering discounts on the store’s website.
Parent Company Shutdowns
Conn’s Inc., the Texas-based parent company of Badcock, filed for bankruptcy protection on July 23, citing declining sales and reduced consumer spending. The company initially planned to close 73 stores across 13 states, but the plan expanded to shutting down all of its more than 170 locations. These closures will affect stores across 15 Southern states, leaving over 4,000 employees without jobs.
Among the locations closing are 70 stores in Texas, 20 in Florida, 12 in North Carolina, and 11 in Louisiana, among others. Conn’s Inc., which acquired Badcock Home Furniture in December 2023, reported having an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 creditors in its bankruptcy filing.
Community Impact
The news has sparked disappointment and concern among customers and community members. One Facebook user lamented, “Another piece of stability in the community… gone.”
As Badcock Home Furniture works to liquidate its inventory, customers have a limited time to take advantage of the deep discounts before the stores close for good. The closures mark the end of an era for a retailer that has served communities across the South for decades.
Other Store Closures
Badcock isn’t the only retailer facing closures. The struggling food chain Red Lobster has announced another round of shutdowns across the U.S., and a Family Dollar store in South Dakota is also closing amid several other shutdowns across the country.
