ACT FAST: Taxpayers have three ways to claim one-time payments from $14.95 million filing settlement
According to THE SUN, A popular tax filing service, TaxAct, is set to pay $14.95 million to users following a class action lawsuit over privacy violations. The lawsuit alleged that TaxAct mishandled user privacy by sharing information with third parties like Meta and Google.
Settlement Details
TaxAct, while denying any wrongdoing, has agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims. Users who filed their taxes using TaxAct’s do-it-yourself service, including those who completed a 1040 form, may be eligible for a payout. To qualify, individuals must have used TaxAct between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022. Spouses who had a joint return filed on their behalf may also be eligible.
Most claimants can expect payouts of approximately $18.65. California residents might receive additional benefits due to the state’s stringent privacy laws. Besides the financial compensation, TaxAct is offering a free tax service for 2024 to all class members.
Claims must be submitted by September 11, either online or by mail. Note that individuals who previously filed an arbitration demand with TaxAct are not eligible for this settlement.
Acrisure Faces Data Breach Settlement
In a related case, Acrisure, a finance technology and insurance brokerage company, has agreed to an undisclosed settlement following a data breach in 2022. The breach exposed personal information and put consumers at risk of financial harm.

Settlement Benefits
Although Acrisure denies any wrongdoing, the settlement is intended to avoid further litigation. Eligible individuals—those who received notice that their personal information was compromised—can claim up to $4,000 to cover financial losses from identity theft or fraud. Additionally, claimants can receive $25 per hour for up to four hours of lost time related to the breach. The settlement also includes two years of credit monitoring and identity protection services.
The deadline to file a claim is October 15, with the final approval hearing scheduled for November 8.
