
According to The Sun, An international law firm, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, is set to distribute payments of up to $10,000 to individuals affected by its recent $8 million data breach settlement, contingent upon receipt submission.
Settlement Details
Founded in San Francisco, Orrick’s settlement comes in response to allegations that it compromised client information due to a data breach. Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit contend that hackers gained access to their data through unauthorized file transfers, attributing the breach to the firm’s alleged negligence.
The lawsuit claims that Orrick should have enacted reasonable cybersecurity measures to safeguard client information. Although the firm did not admit any wrongdoing, it agreed to the substantial settlement to resolve the class action lawsuit.
Compensation Breakdown
Under the settlement’s terms, affected individuals may receive various cash benefits, including:
- Lost Time Payments: Reimbursement for up to five hours of lost time, compensated at a rate of $25 per hour.
- Expense Reimbursement: Up to $2,500 for ordinary expenses incurred while addressing the data breach, including costs related to any resulting identity theft or fraud.
- Total Payments: Individuals can claim a total of up to $10,000.

For those who prefer not to pursue reimbursement payments, a $75 alternative cash payment is available. Additionally, California residents can benefit from an extra $150 under the state’s Consumer Privacy Act.
Additional Benefits
Beyond financial compensation, class members are entitled to three years of free three-bureau credit monitoring and identity theft protection.
Eligibility and Claim Submission
The settlement applies to individuals who received a data breach notification from Orrick between March 2023 and December 2023. To secure their settlement benefits, affected individuals must submit a valid claim form by October 28.
Proof of purchase is required to obtain cash payments, which may include account statements, phone or internet bills, tax returns, and more.
Final Approval Hearing
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 8.
