$300 Direct Payments for New York Families in August: Key Information and Eligibility Criteria

According to a Newsweek Governor Kathy Hochul said last week that New York will send $300 straight payments to families every month in August.

It is thought that the extra payments, worth up to $330 per child, will help more than a million people.

The money is going to poor families through the Empire State Child Credit, which will give out about $350 million this month.

Hochul said that families with low to middle incomes can get the money without having to fill out an application.

Hochul has tried to lower the cost of living in New York in the past, giving $2.60 billion in extra payments to New Yorkers since 2022. Also, the state just recently set up a website where people can go to get help paying for child care.

People in New York got back a lot of the $2.6 billion through the 2022 homeowner tax refund credit, the 2022 supplemental Earned Income Tax Credit, and payments from the Empire State Child Credit in the past.

“We’re putting money back in the pockets of more than a million New Yorkers because this administration delivers for working families,” Hochul wrote in a statement. “We still have work to do. I will keep trying to lower the cost of living for working parents and help them build a better future for their children. I will do this by increasing access to child care help and expanding tax credits.

The Empire State Child Credit was made available to children younger than four years old last year. This meant that an extra 600,000 kids could get help from the credit.

People in New York who are eligible for the extra payment won’t have to do anything to get it. You’ll get another check in the mail if you got an Empire State Child Credit of at least $100 on your 2023 state tax return.

The state said that the child credit payment would be sent the first week of August and that the cash would be sent out over the next few weeks.

“I am proud that under my leadership the Senate Majority has proudly fought to make childcare more affordable for working families, including expanding the childcare assistance program to expand income eligibility, making more families eligible for the program, and supporting families with the greatest need,” Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the state Senate leader, said in a note.

“The one-time supplemental payments under the Empire State Child Tax Credit Program will be life changing for families across our state, and comes at such a vital time when so many are struggling with the high cost of living.”

Your government adjusted gross income will tell you the exact amount you’ll get. Families that make less than $10,000 a year will get their child tax credit amount paid to them. Families that make more than $10,000 a year will get at least 25% of that amount.
