A Bernalillo High School educator has been named New Mexico’s Teacher of the Year. The Public Education Department awarded Lorilei Chavez the honor during a surprise ceremony on Thursday.
Chavez, who teaches Native American studies, has also introduced Indigenous-focused extracurricular activities to the school. As a member of the Santo Domingo Pueblo, she is the first Native American to receive this distinction.
