14,000 additional citizens may be eligible for SNAP worth $3,200 per year in this State thanks to new rules
According to Vibes.okdiario, The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal initiative, but states have the flexibility to implement improvements to better serve their residents. In a significant move, Governor Josh Green, M.D., is seeking $45 million in additional welfare relief for families in Hawai‘i.
This measure is expected to provide substantial assistance to struggling families, allowing between 13,000 and 14,000 households to receive approximately $3,200 on average each year through SNAP benefit payments, formerly known as food stamps.
Who Will Benefit from the SNAP Program Enhancement?
Governor Green emphasizes that this initiative “is going to provide huge relief for our working-class families,” particularly important in a state known for having the highest cost of living in the United States.
To implement these changes, the State of Hawaii will follow recommendations from a recent study conducted by the University of Hawai‘i Economic Research Organization (UHERO).
It is important to note that a family of four can currently receive up to $1,759 per month in SNAP benefits, although this amount will decrease to $1,723 starting October 1, 2024, due to the 2025 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).
Changes to SNAP Rules to Increase Eligibility
Since changes were made in 2000, states have gained more flexibility in adjusting eligibility rules. In Hawaii’s case, the state can establish a program known as Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE).
BBCE allows states to eliminate asset limits, meaning that households with significant savings can still qualify for SNAP benefits. Additionally, this measure permits states to raise the income thresholds for eligibility. If the net income limit is removed, between 13,000 and 14,000 low-income households would qualify for SNAP assistance, which would represent a significant financial commitment from the state.
